Is Your Baby’s White Noise Machine Too Loud?
A Guide to Safe Sound Levels for Your Infant
By: Karyn Voels Malesevic, Au.D., CCC-A
Welcoming a new baby brings so many joyful moments—and often, a search for better sleep. White noise machines can be a helpful tool but using them safely is key to protecting your baby’s hearing while creating a calm sleep environment.
Why Sound Levels Matter
Babies experience sound differently than adults. Because their ear canals are smaller, noise can feel louder and more intense. What seems comfortable to you may be too loud for your baby.
Keep Volume at a Safe Level
Experts recommend keeping continuous noise at or below 50 decibels (dB), about the level of a quiet conversation.
Helpful tip:
If you can clearly hear the white noise machine from across the room, it’s likely too loud for your baby.
Place the Machine at a Safe Distance
Where you place the machine matters just as much as the volume.
- Keep it at least 7 feet away from the crib
- Never place it inside or directly next to the crib
This helps reduce the intensity of sound reaching your baby.
Give Your Baby’s Ears a Break
Constant noise isn’t ideal for long periods of time.
- Use a timer so the machine turns off after your baby falls asleep
- Allow for quiet time during the day to give their ears a rest
Consider Other Sounds in the Room
White noise is not the only sound in your baby’s environment.
- Avoid placing the crib near loud vents or HVAC systems
- Turn off “fan always on” settings when possible
Creating natural quiet moments can help balance your baby’s sound exposure.
Check Noise Levels at Home
You can easily test your baby’s sleep environment:
- Download a free sound level meter app (such as the NIOSH app)
- Place your phone where your baby’s head would be
- Turn on the white noise machine and check the reading
If levels are consistently above 50–60 dB, lower the volume or move the device further away.
Supporting Safe Sleep
White noise can be a helpful part of your baby’s sleep routine. With a few simple adjustments, you can create a safe, calming environment that supports both rest and healthy development.
