Do mealtimes feel stressful? Maybe your child has a limited diet, refuses to sit at the table, or keeps eliminating food choices. As a pediatric dietitian, I hear this often and want to help.
Recently, I helped Tommy and his family with similar concerns. Children may avoid trying new foods because of anxiety, a negative experience, or simply not being exposed again after a rejection, but the good news is that it’s never too late to learn to enjoy new foods.
When Tommy came to Easterseals at 18 months, he was only drinking from a bottle and eating very few fruits, veggies, and no meat. Within three sessions, we established a new mealtime routine and food introduction. He has moved on from the bottle and now sits at the table and eats fruit, veggies mixed with lentils, chicken nuggets, and eggs. This progress has supported his growth, reduced mealtime stress, and encouraged his family to try new foods together too.
