This program offers individual support and intensity to facilitate faster progress toward AAC-based communication goals.
Augmentative and Assistive Communication (AAC)
AAC includes all forms of communication that are used to supplement or replace oral speech to express thoughts, needs, wants and ideas. AAC allows children to communicate more easily and, in doing so, reduces frustrations for the individual and his or her family.
Who Should Participate in an AAC Intensive?
Intensive AAC therapy is especially helpful for:
- Early AAC learners
- Individuals who have devices but aren’t using them effectively
- Families looking for support in learning use of their child’s AAC device
- Individuals with complex communication needs who need to determine an appropriate device and access method
Why Intensive Therapy Can Be Effective
Research and clinical practice suggest that:
- Frequent practice strengthens motor planning
- Consistent modeling improves language acquisition
- High exposure increases spontaneous communication
- Family training improves long-term outcomes
Schedule
Evaluations will be conducted to determine a specific treatment plan and appropriateness for intensive therapy. Plans may include SLP-only services or co-treatments between OT and SLP. Sessions may be scheduled for 4-5 weeks.
